BIO FOR PETER MENDIA
Neil Young is the music world’s version of Pete Mendia. Magestic riffs that echo the unique raw melodies that make you grit your teeth and say yeahnow…..tracks that no-one else can claim or copy. The “madman” buries the rail like no other, always pulls in deep, and devours oncoming lips like he’s out for blood. This right coast Florida resident simply LOVES surfing and when he’s called on, he’s ready to get on the plane to anywhere on the planet and attack bone-breaking pits in strange uncharted waters. Poppa Pete’s got a rad wife and two boys that are pistols; he’s one of the few professionals in our sport that I know of who balances both career and family with success in both. He’s kind of a giant in stature and can pummel you if he wanted to, but he doesn’t need to cause he always seems to just be cruising….enjoying the show.
BIO FOR NAGE
Nage’ Melamed was born at home, in a Jacuzzi, November 13, 1993 on Hanalei Bay. The family had just returned from a month long trip to Huahine- her Dad’s favorite Tahitian island. After watching Nage’ float to the surface- and still thinking in French- her father exclaimed Nage’! (which is French for swimming) and the name stuck like a duck to water.
She was born into a surfing family and tossed her way across Hanalei shore breaks and sandbars since the age of 3. Nage’ also loved Looney Tune cartoons .. and when she was 5 years of age, a small tubular sandbar formed in the late spring right in front of her house!.. she soft boarded tiny perfect barrels for about 4 weeks, and we named the spot Rooney Tubes (after her love for Looney Tunes).. thus the nickname Roonie, which is an intimate nickname of hers known and used primarily with her parents and closest of friends.
Nagé traveled to many amateur surf contests with her parents and older brother and sister. She was socially adept and made friends with most of the surfers. Coco Ho and Molly Payne were her usual cohorts in adolescent antics at these surfing events, as Nage’s siblings, Dylan and Mia competed against the states, and nations best riders.
Nage’ loved to dance Tahitian, and performed weekly at special luaus at the Princeville Hotel. She loved the limelight. But another love was calling. .
It was the first Andy and Bruce Irons Grom Event that gave Nage’ a taste for competition. At the age of 10 she asked if she could start competing in NSSA and HASA contests. She loved the competition, the travel, as well as the fanfare.
Contest results only seemed natural. Winning State championships, and Surfing America crowns and NSSA finals in all age divisions, at many stages and levels of competiton, including placing 2nd in the Rip Curl Grom Search World Championships in Australia. And now traveling round the world competing in ASP womens events, as well as representing Hawaii in ISA WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP events against upwards of 30 nations.
Most importantly however is Nage’s love of the ocean, the sport and her friends. And while Coco Ho and Laura Enever are her two closest travel partners, she has a close knit group of friends on Kauai, as well as her facebook buddies and international surf family of pro surfers. Alana Blanchard, Bethany H.amilton, Erika Steiner, and Annabelle Marvi- Nage’s friends on Kauai push each other to perform even better at their homebreaks around the Garden Island. Nage’s training includes ,Pilates, Zumba, Kickboxing as well as other crosstraining activities.
Nage’s first year (at the age of 16), competing on the ASP womens WQS level was a rewarding one. She finished the year ranked 20th after making it to the Semi finals at the Triple Crown at Haleiwa.
Foxhead clothing and Makani Mcdonalds 808 Monstah surfboards have played an important part to her success. Providing impetus, incentive and the right equipment.
Other support sponsors include Ted Shreds surf wax candle company that promotes her thru ads and posters in stores around the united states and in surf media and website.
Her surf coach for technique and contest strategy is an ASP JUDGE and surfer Craig Hoshide, and who’s knowledge of the island, as well as contest parameters and efficient style have helped Nage’ advance .
Her trainer is the North Shore charger Kahea Hart who works with her while on the North Shore of Oahu. Helping her train for the Hawaii Junior World Surf events, and implementing routine of conditioning, flexibility and proper nutrition on a daily basis.
It seems from the moment Nage’rose thru the waters of the Jacuzzi to the clear trade winds along the shoreline at Hanalei, she was destined to do one thing. . and that’s been to live up to her namesake and perform in a sea that surrounds planet earth.
